Proto-Freelance 20′ Fire Car Kit
Our latest addition to our growing line of high quality, prototypically correct, polyurethane kits is this 20′ fire car kit. Built on our new 20′ flat car frame, this free-lanced, fire fighting car is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow guage railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car, it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day. Typically, a railroad would take an older, dis-used water tank and add a steam or air driven pump (this model uses air) and one or two hoses. The pump could be used to make water pressure for the fire hoses or could be run backwards to fill the tank from a pond or stream. The tool box on the platform was used to store tools, extra hose, and nozzels. While this kit is more challenging than most of our kits, we have designed the parts for easy assembly. This excellent addition to anyone’s layout is now available in On3 or On30 (FMW-2324)! This high quality, polyurethane kit features the following:

Proto-Freelance 20′ Gondola/Ore Car Kit
Yet another new addition to our growing line of high quality, prototypically correct, all styrene car kits, and originally designed for use on our own On3 mining layout: this free-lanced gondola is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car, it was designed and built following standard construction practices of the day. Typically, these low sided gondolas, built on flat cars, would have been used to haul ore, rock, sand, or ballast. These cars could be easily loaded using any ore chute type loader, but would have to be hand shoveled out. These cars had a low cubic capacity due to the heavy weight of the material they carried, the light construction of the cars, and the relatively low capacity of the trucks. This kit will make either a full length gondola or a half-gondola/half-flat car with the gondola bin either centered or at one end of the car. This styrene kit is identical to the finished, polyurethane version of the kit — down to the tapered side stakes of the original — and even has scale nail heads on the 2″x4″s “nailed” to the end boards! This new version of kit FMW-2213 replaces polyurethane kits FMW-2213 and FMW-2222, which are now out of production and no longer available. We believe that this highly detailed, easy to assemble kit will make as excellent an addition to any layout as it is on ours! This high quality, styrene kit features the following:

Proto-Freelance 20′ Flat Car Kit
The second of our all styrene car kits and designed to accompany our 20′ Gondola, this free-lanced flat car is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car, it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day. We believe that this highly detailed, easy to assemble kit will make as excellent an addition to any layout as it is on ours! This high quality, styrene kit features the following:

On3, Proto-Freelance 26′ Connected Truck, Log Car Kit
The first of our styrene car kits, this car is intended to be a proto-typically correct, shortened version of the WSLCo. 38′ “Skeleton” log cars. We’ve shortened these cars from 38′ to 26′ to enable these cars to better match the smaller equipment and better fit the tighter curves of the average home layout. As shown, they will go around a 30″ radius curve, tighter with a few simple modifications (such as the flange wells carved into the sills of the WSLCo. cars). Note to On30 fans: no, a 30″ gauge version of this car is not possible; at 27″, the width of the sills would not allow 30″ gauge wheels to turn (let alone allow the trucks to pivot) without a radical redesign of the car. While there is no known prototype for this car, the details are all proto-typically correct, following standard building practices as shown in Seattle Car & Foundry Co.’s catalogs. Additional parts not on WSLCo.’s cars, such as the large, outside, truck side bearings were taken out of a Lovsted parts catalog. Remaining details were created through the study of the remaining WSLCo. cars. Since this car is meant to represent a possible Seattle Car & Foundry Co. car, we should also note that these cars are not technically “skeleton” cars, as the sills do not carry any of the weight of the load; which is carried entirely by the bunks and bolsters. According to SC&FCo. patents, these kinds of cars are “connected truck” cars (credit David Braun for alerting us to this fact that these cars are almost universally mis-named in model railroading). This kit was designed using San Juan Car Co.’s WSLCo. bunks and brake hardware; MacLeod Westerns trucks and NBW castings; and features all new die work by FMW for the sills, draft gear, and some detail parts. FMW’s styrene castings for this kit are made from a high-quality styrene and have been produced without the draft angle on their outside edges that make so many model railroad kits difficult to assemble and finish. The two-piece center section of the sills is hollow to allow for a ½oz. weight, “pre-drilled” for the side NBW castings, and has most of the scale NBW castings cast in place for quick and easy assembly. The draft timbers (also with the NBW cast in place) have an integrated, screw mounted Kadee® coupler box that allows coupler changing and maintenance after assembly and painting. Important mounting and locating points are cast into the parts and the joint between the draft timbers and the main center section is completely hidden by the bunks. In short, we think this kit will make an excellent addition to any On3 logging layout. This high quality, injected molded, styrene kit features the following: FMW Injected Molded Styrene Parts:

Proto-Freelance Wooden Bunk, 20′ Logging Flat Car Kit
Designed to accommodate our 20′ frame, this free-lanced, wooden bunk, flat car is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car, it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day. This car is also made to look like it had been made from a modified, 20′ flat car. During that modification, heavy timbers were added to the deck to be used as log bunks and the stake pockets were removed, as they would no longer be needed. We believe that this highly detailed, easy to assemble kit will make as excellent an addition to any layout as it is on ours! This high quality, polyurethane kit features the following:

Proto-Freelance 20′ Equipment Flat Car Kit
Designed to accommodate our 20′ frame, this free-lanced, equipment flat car is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car (though the board arrangemnt follows WSLCo. practice), it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day. This car is also made to look like it had been made from a modified, 20′ flat car. During that modification, extra boards were added to the deck to aid in the loading of wheeled and tracked vehicles. Proto-Freelance 20′ Coal Car Kit
Yet another new addition to our growing line of high quality, prototypically correct, all styrene car kits, and designed to fit our On30/On3 20′ Flat Car kits: this free-lanced coal gondola is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. While there is no prototype for this particular car, it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day and closely follows the construction method used on the Colorado & Southern’s home built, 1902, 30′ coal cars (#4246 — 4407). The cars could be easily loaded using any chute type of loader and could be emptied using a rotary dumper, but would typically have been hand shoveled out. These cars had a low weight capacity due to the light construction of the cars and the relatively low capacity of the trucks, though we did match the cubic capacity (in coal) of the gondola bin to the theoretical capacity of the car. We believe that this highly detailed, easy to assemble kit will make as excellent an addition to any layout as it is on ours! This high quality, styrene kit features the following:

Proto-Freelance 20′ On3 Steel Bunk, Logging Flat Car Kit
Designed to accommodate our 20′ frame, this free-lanced, logging flat car is typical of many such cars used on short line narrow gauge railroads in the first half of the twentieth century. This kit is designed to look like a flat car that has been converted to haul logs through the addition of steel log bunks to its deck. It can be modified to suit your tastes, with a choice of needle beams, buffer blocks, truss rod nut/washers, and whether or not the original stake pockets were scavenged when the car was converted to haul logs. Also note that the brake staff on flat cars is easily removable (from the ratchet and pawl up), so it can be safely stowed when loaded with logs. While there is no prototype for this particular car (though the arrangemnt follows WSLCo. practice), it was designed and built following standard building practices of the day. We believe that this highly detailed, easy to assemble kit will make as excellent an addition to any layout as it is on ours! This high quality, styrene kit features the following:
